Plant Olympics

The Events

APRIL: Fastest Seedling Competition
Start some plants from seed late March or early April. *Hint: Ask your parents to do an internet search for seeds that grow fast. Bring them back to Broadway Gardens on Saturday, April 26 for the final measurement. The tallest seedlings will win. Prizes will be awarded at 12:00 noon sharp.

MAY: Longest Roots Competition
Ask a parent to help you take a cutting of a plant in March or April and put it in a small clean glass of water. Change the water every few weeks. Small roots will start to grow and get longer with each passing week. *Hint: trailing houseplants like Ivy’s, Spiderplants and Pothos work well, outdoor plants like pussywillow and forsythia will also grow roots from cuttings. Bring your rooted cutting to Broadway Gardens on Saturday, May 31 for the final measurement. The longest roots will win. Prizes will be awarded at 12:00 noon sharp. *If you can not make it on Saturday you can bring in your plant for a measurement the week before and we will record it along with your name and phone number for entry in the prize decision.

JUNE: Most Flowers Competition
Grow a 10” pot or basket from seed, or with store bought plants. How you do it is up to you. We are looking for the basket with the most flowers. THERE IS A CATCH, the flowers must be about the size of a loonie or larger so this would include impatiens, marigolds, or others of similar size. This is so we won’t have to count thousands of tiny flowers. Bring your basket to Broadway Gardens on Saturday, June 28. The plant with the most flowers wins. Prizes will be awarded at 12:00 noon sharp. *If you can not make it on Saturday you can bring in your plant for a count the week before and we will record it along with your name and phone number for entry in the prize decision.

JULY: Tallest Plant Competition
Sunflowers would make a good plant for this contest, but you can also try corn or other tall plants. Start them from seed or small starter plants in a container no larger than 10” in diameter. (This will limit their height somewhat and make it easier to transport the plants) *Hint: start your plants in mid-May. Entries do not have to be in flower, we are just measuring for height. Bring in your tall plants to Broadway Gardens on Saturday, July 26. The tallest plant wins. Prizes will be awarded at 12:00 sharp. *If you can not make it on Saturday you can bring in your plant for a measurement the week before and we will record it along with your name and phone number for entry in the prize decision.

AUGUST: Biggest Tomato Competition
Start some tomatoes in your garden in May. Varieties like Beefsteak or Big Boy grow large tomatoes. Bring your biggest (heaviest) tomato to Broadway Gardens on Saturday, August 30. The heaviest tomato wins. Prizes will be awarded at 12:00 noon sharp. *If you can not make it on Saturday you can bring in your plant for a measurement the week before and we will record it along with your name and phone number for entry in the prize decision.
