Prickly Pear CactusHardy Cactus
The Hardy Cactus is among the easiest of the exotic plants for Niagara gardens. They thrive on neglect, so plant them where they will receive little moisture.  The well-known Eastern Prickly Pear cactus is native to extreme southern parts of Ontario, but is rarely found. The Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus makes up for its small distribution by being the largest Canadian cactus. These will survive outdoors as far north as Ottawa, but they must have dry soil. The plant’s most striking feature is its large, waxy, rose-like yellow flower that blooms in late June and early July.
