Perennials typically have a season of bloom. The secret to a great perennial garden is to choose plants that flowers at different times. An all season perennial garden could include Helleborus for very early bloom followed by creeping Phlox and Columbine for spring colour. May and June bloomers include Siberian Iris in blues, whites and yellows as well as the four foot tall Giant Goat’s Beard. Gaillardia, Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’, and the red Daylily ‘Pardon Me’ will provide great summer colour. For fall bloom every perennial garden should include Anemones. These flowering plants can be combined with foliage plants like evergreen Heucheras which come in shades of purple, yellow and amber foliage, as well as ornamental grasses for a dramatic touch.
